High-Speed Efficient Solver

Explicit simulations can require significant amount of computer time. ANSYS LS-DYNA has been tuned for maximum performance. In addition to finely tuned single processor performance, ANSYS LS-DYNA software runs efficiently in parallel with near-linear improvement in speed with the use of additional processors.

Preprocessing Based on ANSYS Workbench

Users of ANSYS Mechanical software have been able to take advantage of complex explicit solutions for a long time utilizing the traditional ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) environment. More recently the powerful and comprehensive ANSYS Workbench environment has brought bi-directional CAD connectivity, geometry clean-up tools automatic meshing, extensive meshing tools to improve performance and quick simple definition of initial and boundary conditions to users of ANSYS LS-DYNA. The explicit dynamic file export feature delivers all the power of the ANSYS Workbench environment and produces an input file (.k) that is run by the ANSYS LS-DYNA solver. The LS-PrePost program included with each installation provides easy to use yet powerful ways to view the results of the simulation.

Contact Algorithms

Interaction between parts in an explicit dynamic simulation is modeled with a contact algorithm. Contact algorithms have to take into consideration many possibly complex interactions. Depending on the type of problem that is being simulated, special-purpose contact can be used to achieve a stable, accurate, yet efficient result. While the automatic contact is the easiest to use and can handle the overwhelming majority of problems, alternate special purpose contact can be useful and powerful. ANSYS LS-DYNA offers an extensive set of contact algorithms such as automatic, single surface, spot weld, surface-to-surface-eroding, edge-to-edge, draw beads and many more.

Material Models

Material models are used to simulate the response of materials to dynamic loadings. ANSYS LS-DYNA software has comprehensive material modeling capabilities that encompass almost any type of material response required in an explicit dynamic simulation. The models include orthotropic, thermo-elasto-plastic, elastoplastic with fracture, strain rate dependent, orthotropic crushable, composite damage, temperature and rate dependent and these are just a small subset of all the available models.
