Composite materials are created by combining two or more layered materials, each with different properties. These materials have become a standard for products that are both light and strong. Composites provide enough flexibility so products with complex shapes, such as boat hulls and surfboards, can be easily manufactured.

Engineering layered composites involves complex definitions that include numerous layers, materials, thicknesses and orientations. The engineering challenge is to predict how well the finished product will perform under real-world working conditions. This involves considering stresses and deformations as well as a range of failure criteria. ANSYS Composite PrepPost provides all necessary functionalities for the analysis of layered composite structures.

ANSYS Composite PrepPost software offers a wide choice of state-of-the-art failure criteria, along with post-processing capabilities to allow an in-depth investigation of product behavior. The results for the structure can be looked at globally, or viewed in detail down to the layer level, which enables users to identify accurately reasons a structure could potentially fail. Design iterations can easily be performed to take into account geometric changes or material variations.

Useful for the analysis of an end product, the draping capabilities of ANSYS Composite PrepPost software allow users to correctly identify the exact orientation of each layer of the composite. A flat-wrap capability and the ability to create ply books help in product manufacturing.

3-D Models for Thick Composites

Complex 3-D shapes might require the use of 3-D finite elements rather than layered shell elements. ANSYS Composite PrepPost gives you the ability to extrude a “flat” definition of the plies on a surface to a full 3-D model so that more complex shape can be fitted to a given geometry.
